The theme of men and fatherhood is central to Scripture, especially in this season of tremendous gender confusion – within the Church and without. We need the clear council, insight, and direction of God’s word to give us our moorings and an understanding of how to walk through this age with wisdom beyond ourselves. The fundamental notion is that God’s relationship to humanity, the role He chose for Himself in creation, is that of a father. Our reality is that we have all had fathers with varying degrees of effectiveness, and Scripture gives us the assignment of honoring them, regardless of their performance. That is an increasing challenge in our society, but we cannot have an unsuccessful relationship with one father and expect the other to flourish. God chose our earthly father, giving us the opportunity to honor him. Forgiveness is the key – giving forgiveness to your father, children, in the midst of their shortcomings and deficiencies; and receiving forgiveness, fathers, for your inadequacies and failures. Few things in life have potential for greater transformation than these two acts of forgiveness, because the fact is, men matter.
